JODI FAQs
-
What is JODI?
The Joint Organisations Data Initiative (JODI) is a producer-consumer collaboration that publishes free, internationally comparable energy data based on nationally sanctioned submissions from participating economies, improving transparency and market understanding worldwide.
-
Who are the JODI partner organisations?
APEC, Eurostat, the International Energy Agency (IEA), OLACDE, OPEC, the UN Statistics Division (UNSD), and the IEF (coordinator).
-
Why does JODI matter?
Lack of timely, reliable energy data can fuel uncertainty and price volatility. By improving data transparency through official monthly submissions and shared methodologies, JODI supports better analysis, moderates undue volatility, and strengthens investor confidence.
- What data does JODI publish?
-
How does JODI ensure data quality?
Data are compiled by national administrations and channeled via partner organizations. JODI does not substitute or estimate missing data; partners help compilers improve submissions, verify internal consistency, and publish a Data Confidence (Colour Code) assessment:

-
How widely is JODI used and who participates?
Around 80 countries/economies report to JODI-Oil, with roughly 70 submitting M-1 data monthly.
JODI-Gas coverage is close to 90% of global gas markets.Reporting quality is tracked in the Participation Assessments:
-
Where can I find definitions and methods?
The JODI Manuals provide agreed definitions, classifications, and reporting guidelines:
-
What does JODI-Oil publish each month?
Country submissions on crude oil and refined product production, demand (apparent consumption), imports, exports, and stocks, compiled into a harmonized world database.
-
What are the key JODI-Oil definitions?
Crude oil production: Marketable output after removal of impurities, including quantities consumed by producers.
Stocks: Reported as end-month levels with standardized coverage.

-
How should I interpret units and conversions?
JODI-Oil uses standard units (kb/d, kt) and provides conversion factors for density and calorific values.
See Annex 2 of the JODI Oil Manual
-
How timely is the data?
Most reporters target M-1 (one month after the reference month).
Timeliness is tracked in the Participation Assessments
-
Does JODI adjust or fill gaps in country data?
No. JODI publishes official submissions only. Missing data are flagged in the Data Confidence assessments:
-
Where can I learn the questionnaire logic and validation checks?
See the JODI-Oil Manual for definitions, product classifications, stock-change logic, and validation rules:

Green: High coverage and consistency.
Amber: Some issues with completeness or timeliness.
Red: Limited confidence; data may be missing or incomplete. For more details see:

How should I interpret stocks and stock changes?
Stocks are end-of-month data; stock changes reflect flows during the month.
See the JODI Manuals for further details:
